Welcome to the Mind Body Syndrome/Tension Myositis Syndrome Educational program developed by Howard Schubiner, MD ( Dr. Schubiner’s email is howard.schubiner@stjohn.org His website for more information is www.yourpainisreal.com ) It hurts. Your pain is awful, and you can’t get rid of it. You went to your doctor and he told you that you had a medical condition. The diagnosis was back or neck pain presumably due to arthritis, a bulging disk or spinal stenosis. Or the diagnosis was tension headaches or migraine headaches. Or fibromyalgia or whiplash or chronic tendonitis. Or it might have been stomach pains or pelvic pains with diagnoses of irritable bowel syndrome or interstitial cystitis. Your doctor prescribed drugs. You took them and they didn’t really help. Maybe you even had surgery, but that didn’t help either. So you decided to explore alternative medicine. Maybe you took herbal remedies, vitamins or saw a chiropractor. You’re considering acupuncture, hypnosis, even crystals. But still the pain is there. You get the impression that your doctor doesn’t really know how to help you or understand you. Maybe your doctor referred you to a psychiatrist or psychologist, suggesting that your pain isn’t real, that it’s all in your head. But you’re not imagining or making up the pain. The pain is in your body and it is real. It’s real. But the problem is your diagnosis. If your diagnosis is wrong, you can’t get better. You may not have a serious disease. But you do have a …

Your explanation was outstanding! Extremely interesting.

Excelent.
I disagree with this statement however- “women are nicer, they are more caring”

I had tms manifest itself as debilitating back pain. Worst pain of my life. Read Dr. Sarno’s books and saw him, did treatment plan (Not surgery), am 100% recovered. The brain is very powerful in reacting to emotions and creating physical conditions and pain. This clip is a good explanation–especially about conditioning (Pavlov’s dogs).

well you see for woman, it’s pretty much who they make themselve’s to be.
to give you and honest opinion men and woman have pretty much the same intelligence field, but when it comes to genderhood, we creat this patern that makes us look like where bad and nice.

MBS disregards the fact that some pain manifests itself from INJURY. How would it explain this, as this stress model doesn’t. It only explain chronic illness.
mblumenthal5558 says
Hi SugarBabyUK
I think Dr. Schubiner would agree that much pain has a physiologic explanation. He really emphasizes that his practice should only be followed after the those physical causes have been eliminated as possible sources for the pain.

I agree 100% , first of all think about all these poeple who do “POWERLIFTING”, I mean you see this poeple lifting over 500 lbs Squating over 800 lbs and they do this over and over again on a daily basis. I know, because i go to a Gym. Also think about the actor Jackie Chang who does his own incredible stungs and has broken almost every bone in his body including his back and you still see him making movies and he’s fine. I agree with this Doctor.

I think he meant they are socially expected to be caring.

I suffered with extreme “Fibromyalgia” for 6 years. I was in pain 24 hours a day and had loss and numbness down my legs, in my back, base of my skull, shooting pain in my feet, etc.
I found out about Mind-Body healing about a year and a half ago. I did the mental work, went to a therapist who specializes in TMS/ AOS.
I have been pain free for about a year and never even think about it anymore or am limited physically.
This is VERY real, I am living proof.

This is so basic. I guess it’s good info for people who have never studied or even thought about Transactional Analysis, which was popular in the 60’s.

Thank you for sharing your experience Lotus, I am so happy for you:)!!

but what about injuries?
rdoetjes says
Okay 95% is subconscious 11million bits subconscious vs 40 conscious what’s wrong with that statistic???!!!
That would be 99.999996% subconsious.

For three years now ive been with pain in my legs that comes and goes with the time of day. This information is workable. Thanks

Great explanation of non injury related pain. his explanation has been so much more insightful than the three heavy text books I’ve just read on the matter! Thank you for posting :)
bobbyp719 says
why do we blush?? why do we get goose bumps watching a movie in a warm theater ? why do we get butterflies on a first date? you can believe the mind can cause pain without injury because its true that it does
HypnoticSubliminals says
Awesome information. Thank you! 95% of the thoughts in our unconscious mind directly effect our life–amazing.
SherrinBernstein says
@mblumenthal5558 I think the point is also though that physical pain manifesting from injury is still caused by the brain. If you consider that pain is the brain’s interpretation of danger, which leads us to protecting ourselves, you can easily see that physical manifestations of pain from “injuries” really do come from the brain. It is the brain’s job to pull us back from danger, including re-irritating an injury, how else would it do that? This is what pain is for originally; to protect us.
mblumenthal5558 says
@SherrinBernstein Yes that is very true… Dr. Schubiner thinks that on occasion and for some people, the brain remembers those pain pathways even after the immediate danger has passed. Would you agree?
NorthviewVids says
if pain is in the mind, than why does it feel as if it’s coming straight from the source (e.g. finger), not from your brain? So the only way to get rid of your pain is to get rid of your brain, is that right?
mblumenthal5558 says
@NorthviewVids The point that Dr Schubiner is making is that the pain sensation IS real. The neural pathways have “learned bad habits” and you definitely feel it. Dr. Schubiner’s approach is to retrain the brain’s neural pathways rather than get rid of the brain.
