Records in the Bible around 2000 BC show the use of plants and aromatic oils in the treatment of illness and for religion. Ancient Chinese pharmacopoeia lists herbs whose scents were thought to have therapeutic effects. Ancient Hindu scriptures list hundreds of aromatic substances for religious and therapeutic use. The first evidence of the wide ranging use of aromatic oils comes from the Egyptians who as far back as 3000BC, extracted oils by a method of infusion and used them in a wide variety of ways as cosmetics, for religion, in massage, surgery, food preservation and for mummification. From China, India and Egypt the art of aromatherapy spread to Greece and Rome where the oils were used for aromatic massages and in daily baths. Hippocrates, the Greek physician advocated the use of aromatic oils and wrote about a vast range of medicinal plants claiming that the best way to achieve good health was to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day. A full aromatherapy massage treatment will typically include massage to the body and include the face and scalp.
