Neck and Shoulder Pain The neck is clearly a vital component of our anatomy due to its responsibility for connecting our brain to the rest of the body. Everything that passes through the neck is vital and relies heavily on proper function of the musculoskeletal system to protect and support these structures. Stress is stored in these muscles and can cause headaches, shoulder pain, and other damaging compensations. Sitting at a computer all day, looking down while running, whiplash, sleeping poorly, or sudden movements and changes in direction are also common causes of neck pain. Factors include muscle strain, ligament sprains, arthritis, spinal subluxations, pinched nerves, knots or adhesions, and countless other musculoskeletal complications. The pain is usually not only felt in the neck itself, but also into the base of the neck and the shoulders. Generally the pain can be categorized into two conditions: muscle strain or myofascial strain. Muscle strain can occur when there is an injury to the muscles of the neck, causing spasm of the cervical and upper back muscles. The strain may result from the physical stresses of everyday life, including poor posture, muscle tension from psychological stress, or poor sleeping habits. Typically symptoms include pain, stiffness, and tightness in the upper back or shoulder. Myofascial pain causes tight and tender areas of muscle that are sensitive to pressure. Myofascial pain in the neck can develop after trauma or with other medical …

Life After Spinal Cord Injury: Albert’s Story
Albert was revived at the scene of the crash. He barely survived his car accident. He wasn’t expected to move or breathe on his own again. Nearly given up on, Albert found hope after meeting Ranken Jordan physician, Dr. Nick Holekamp. Albert’s fate drastically changed that day. One of our physiatrists discovered that Albert’s spinal cord injury was incomplete. Now, instead of spending his life in a bed at a nursing home he’s in therapy and launching his career as a motivational speaker.
KT Tape: Rib
Rib Pain The ribs are the individual bones that form the rib cage. The rib cage serves to protect the vital organs such as the lungs and the heart. The rib cage spans from the neck to near the hips and is made of hard bone tissue for protection, but pieced together by flexible cartilage to allow for expansion of the lungs for breathing. Muscles in between each rib hold the bones together, maintain proper spacing, and facilitate the expansion for breathing. Humans have 12 pairs of ribs: 14 true ribs that surround the body, 6 false ribs that partially surround the body starting from the sternum, and 4 false ribs that originate at the spine and do not surround the body at all. Ribs can become bruised, broken, separated, and the muscles can be pulled or torn. Excessive strain in twisting motions, abrupt direction changes, or a blunt force can all cause muscle pain of the ribs, while blunt or sharp forces are almost always the cause of breaks or bruising. Rib pain is often felt at or around the ribs and can radiate into the back or abdominals. The pain can range from sore or annoying on inspiration to extremely painful and disruptive of normal breathing. Use KT Tape to relieve pressure and pain, increase circulation to promote the healing process, and relax any strained muscles. Due to the properties of KT Tape, the ribs remain flexible enough to allow for breathing, but excess motion is alleviated and increased circulation is encouraged. This flexible support provides a very …

Fix your shoulder pain! Part 1
This video focuses on the stretching component of dysfunctional shoulder posture correction. In plain English, this video will teach you the optimal stretches used to correct bad shoulder posture. By correcting posture you eliminate the impingement conditions that lead to shoulder problems in nearly all cases. I have used this system to correct over 30 shoulders in the past 8 months, not including my own. Some are over the internet, many are in the gym. None are solicited, I have the reputation of knowing how the body works and being able to correct things very simply and effectively. This ability comes from literally an entire lifetime of reading and practicing on myself as I got injured throughout my athletic training career. These particular shoulder stretches were first shown to me by Coach Sommer of gymnasticbodies.com at his May Seminar out in Arizona and are much more effective than the wall or doorway versions of these stretches. My knowledge of this subject (postural correction) was greatly enhanced by my discovery of Pete Egoscue’s book “Pain Free.” I HIGHLY recommend that everyone own a copy of this book and read it. It is in plain English with no medical language, very easy to read and understand. It is 14 dollars and can save you from months of rehab and the associated costs, not to mention more catastrophic injury later in life. Once posture is corrected, THEN I absolutely advocate working on specific strengthening exercises for rotator cuff muscles and some …

KT Tape: Middle Back Pain
The middle back is a combination of vertebrae from the upper and middle sections of the back and muscles that run the entire length of the back. These muscles support the spine, flex and extend the torso, move the upper limbs and head, as well as function to keep your body in an upright position. Middle back pain can be attributed to poor posture, weakness in the muscles, overuse, or overly tight/knotted muscles. These conditions can cause muscle imbalance, muscle fatigue, pain, and tears. In some cases, spasms are associated with the pain. This is primarily due to poor nutrient circulation to the nervous system and can be addressed by increasing blood flow. Typical treatments for middle back pain include rest and ice, as well as massage, electrical stimulation (ultrasound), light and frequent stretching, alternating ice and heat, and strength training of the opposing muscle group (the abdominals) to relieve pressure from the back. Using this KT Tape application can relieve pressure from the painful spot and send correct signaling to the muscles that allow them to relax.
